How to Pamper a Senior Cat

Is your cat entering her golden years? Fluffy will likely age slowly and gracefully, so you probably won’t notice drastic changes happening quickly. Your kitty will definitely slow down as she ages, however, and she may need some extra TLC to stay happy, healthy, and purring. Below, an Upper Arlington, OH veterinarian lists some ways to pamper your senior kitty.

Veterinary Care

First and foremost, make sure Fluffy sees the vet at least once a year. This greatly increases the odds of any medical issues being caught early, which can be very beneficial. At home, watch for any signs of illness. If you notice anything unusual about your cat’s appearance, appetite, or behavior, call your vet immediately. Keep up on parasite control is also important.

Daily Play Sessions

Playing is great for older kitties. It will help keep Fluffy physically active, provide helpful mental stimulation, and keep her entertained. Plus, it’s really fun! Aim for at least one session each day, even if it’s just a few minutes.

Napping Spots

Fluffy will somehow manage to nap even more during her golden years than she usually does. Provide plenty of soft beds and warm, cozy spots for your sleepy furball to snuggle up in.

As Fluffy ages, she may have trouble reaching her entire body when grooming herself. Brush your kitty gently to help her out. Offer praise and compliments, so she feels pampered and loved.

Senior-Friendly Facilities

Senior cats often find it easier to get in and out of litterboxes that don’t have high walls. Consider upgrading your furball’s powder room. If your home has multiple floors, put out extra litterboxes on each story, so Fluffy doesn’t have to use the stairs as much.

Your feline friend’s vision may decline as she grows older. Leave nightlights on after you go to bed to help Fluffy get around at night.

Cats often get stiff and sore as they age. Fluffy may have difficulty jumping onto beds or sofas at naptime. Set out pet ramps for her, or arrange footstools so she can use them as steps.

Spend time with Fluffy, and make sure she feels loved and safe. Your faithful feline will still purr when she feels happy!
