Kitten Care Tips

Have you recently adopted a kitten? Congratulations! Being a kitten parent is lots of fun. Taking care of a furry little toddler is quite a bit of work, however. It’s up to you to guide little Fluffy as she grows, and help her mature from a bouncing ball of cute into a happy, healthy cat. An Upper Arlington, OH vet offers some great kitten care tips below.

Veterinary Care

Little Fluffy will need to see the vet a few times her first year. Exams, vaccines, parasite control, and spay/neuter surgery are all in order. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Your kitten has a lot of growing to do! Give your tiny furball high-quality, nourishing food. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Cats don’t usually need much training when it comes to using litterboxes. We do recommend starting out with a small one, however. Avoid clay and clumping litters, as they are dangerous for baby cats.

Offer your kitten lots of playthings, and teach her that you are not a cat toy. If your furball tries to attack you, tell her ‘No’ firmly, then ignore her for a while. You definitely don’t want little Fluffy to grow up thinking that biting and scratching you is great fun!

Your tiny ball of mischief is going to want to explore every inch of her new kingdom. This can lead a furry little adventurer right into trouble! You’ll want to take some precautions to keep your kitten safe. Remove or secure toxic plants, cords and wires, chemicals, medicines, and plastic bags. Keep major appliances, like washers and dryers, closed, and make sure your doors and screens shut tightly. You’ll also want to keep breakable items and anything small or sharp out of reach of those cute paws. A rule of thumb? If it’s remotely dangerous, your pet will probably want to play with it. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Now the fun part! Pay lots of attention to little Fluffy. Spend time every day holding toys or a laser pointer for her to chase. When she gets sleepy after all that pouncing and jumping, let her snuggle up on your lap. In our book, a kitten’s purr is a truly precious gift!
